Christmas Craft Classes

Adult Christmas Craft
Wed., Dec. 9 - 7 p.m.
Community Room
Participants will make a painted trimmed tree glass treat jar. (See above photo.) A supply list is available at the circulation desk.

Children's Christmas Craft
Fri., Dec. 11 - 3 p.m.
Children's Area
Children will make felt Christmas tree ornaments. The library will provide the supplies.

Both classes are free and registration is not required.

First Snow of the Season

Well, we have seen the first snow of the season! Are you ready for it? As the colder days of December and the holiday season approaches, I always enjoy reading stories that center around the holidays. We have many adult and children's fiction books that will of interest to you. There isn't a better way to share some quality time with the kids than to pick up the "Night Before Christmas" and read it to them. And what about a little relaxation for the busy adults? Grab one of our short story holiday collections, a cup of hot chocolate and read for a half hour or so!

The adult Christmas books are located just to the left of the main glass doors as you enter the library. Children's holiday books are located in the last book case in the picture book section. Come on in, grab some great reading to take home and relax!

Christmas Flea Market

Thanksgiving Craft for Kids

There will be a Thanksgiving craft program for children on Fri., Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. The children will make an apple turkey to take home. All supplies are provided by the library. This program is free and registration is not required.

Library Wins State Building Award

The Lyons Public Library was recently honored by the Public Library Section of the New York Library Association. The Association held its 2009 Annual Conference in Niagara Falls October 14-17 where the Library was awarded one of two state awards for Outstanding Library Building for its new facility. Library Director, Theresa Streb, accepted an award plaque as well as a check for $1,000 on behalf of the Library.

Library Tote Bags for Sale

This resusable heavy duty large (14 1/2 inches high by 13 inches wide, 9 1/2 inches deep) tote bag has the library's logo and contact information on the front of it. The bags were sponsored by the Friends of the Lyons Public Library. Price is $3.50 each and they are available at the circulation desk in the library. All proceeds go to the Friends which then use the money to support the library in various ways.

Knitting Class for Children

The Beginning Knitting Class for children (ages 8 and older) is still open. The 4 week series will start Fri., Oct. 16 at 3:30 p.m. in the Local History Room. Registration is required and limited to 7.

Fall Storyhours to Start in October

On the following Thursdays, October 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 at 1 p.m. (new time) the library will feature a preschool storytime. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring children ages 2-5 to enjoy hearing stories read to them or told to them. Crafts and other activities are included. Wed., Sept. 16 @ 12 p.m. - The Wings of the Angels of Peace
The concluding lecture retraces events in Europe in the final steps to WWII. Topics include the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, the Spanish Civil Ware, “Appeasement” at Munich and the fateful Nazi-Soviet pact which sealed the fate of Poland and eventually Europe.

Monday nights - 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
1 Saturday a month - 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Ability to substitute during other evenings/days.

General description of duties:
Perform routine library clerical operations requiring no prior training or knowledge of library techniques.
Answers to assistants to the director and/or the library director.

Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years old.
Have high school diploma/GED.
Experience using computers.
Enjoy working with the public.

Wage: $7.25/hour

4 personal days after 1 year

Peace for Our Time Lecture Series

Japanese Atrocities & Remembering the Past
With the infamous "Rape of Nanking," the Japanese military provoked international condemnation for their atrocities which they denied. This led to an ongoing battle for historical truth that extends to the present. This lecture includes commentary on how the Japanese established such a formidable military presence and why the democracies did not repsond to their aggresion more forcefully.

Jean Seymour, a former English teacher from Newark High School, will review the book, "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.
